ABSTRACT

Human life is reliant on the availability of clean air, water and natural settings; yet environmental conditions around the world are in decline. Sport also, in many cases, relies on clean air, water, etc. for not only the health of its athletes but also to use in conducting its contests and events. But this use does come at a cost. Research indicates that sport has exhibited an awareness of the impacts it produces on the natural environment. Further, many of those in sport are aware of the global climate change issue and the impacts it is predicted to have on the future of sport. The implementation of actions that offer environmental safeguards through sport have been gaining momentum. The trend, however, does not involve a coordinated effort within the sport industry. This chapter suggests that a coordinated array of environmental safeguards can be instituted within sport that do not detrimentally impact sport today. Climate change reversal technologists/specialists are currently being deployed in the corporate world to increase their capacity of safeguarding the natural environment. Debate on adapting the positions and integrating the climate change reversal technologist or specialist within sport to aid in coordinating the environmental efforts is needed. Leadership in sport is tasked with establishing a roadmap for integrating this strategy and an associated number of technological advances for coordinating bold solutions enacted to ensure the natural environment is readily available for use by sport into the future.
