ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the African challenges of squaring growth with a green transition in the automobile sector geared towards reducing emissions and the impacts of climate change. It examines African collective policies in meeting the objectives of greening the sector. It shows how the realities of the car markets and production milieu promote or delay the move toward eco-efficiency and a green economy. African growth and development is therefore an initial prerequisite for a green transition, even though initially contradictory outcomes emerge. Squaring growth with green transition is a gradual possibility given emerging policy, socio-economic and environment trends, and vehicle manufacturing strategies. Africa's green transition has technology as a major hurdle since most research and development is conducted outside the continent. Africa is therefore reliant on the developed world, with problems of inappropriate and poorly adapted technology in addition to the high costs of transferring better technology to the continent.
