Chapter 9 discourses about open spaces, which the growing city does not have in abundance. Open spaces and community/neighborhood parks can offset the dangerous pollutants, create a place for people to relax, and reduce the over-densification of some neighborhoods. However, the city is losing its open spaces for housing and infrastructure development. The once spacious and green local and city-level parks are vanishing at an alarming rate. The chapter describes the current status of open spaces, their spatial distribution, and people’s perceptions about them, and it calls attention to the role of those open spaces as a place for relaxation and political movements.
