ABSTRACT

Turbochargers are increasingly used with internal combustion engines to increase power output, reduce fuel consumption and reduce emissions. These turbochargers are compact and run at speeds anywhere between 140,000 rpm to 220,000 rpm. This paper introduces the concepts of stable low-cost bearings for use with turbochargers. Based on years of analysis and testing, it is clear that misaligned bearings provide superior stability characteristics. Internally Skewed Bearings are introduced to be used in high speed applications. It is shown numerically that these bearings have superior stability characteristics and are suitable for turbocharger bearings because of their low manufacturing costs.
