ABSTRACT

Staff training in position-specific knowledge as well as skills and development of staff–beginning with orientation through specialized instructions in areas of importance to all staff such as harassment, safety, and company policies—are the foundations that allow the desired outcomes to be achieved. Training is a learning process that involves the acquisition of skills, concepts, rules, and attitudes so as to optimize the performance of each team member. Training objectives are also called performance objectives or behavioral objectives. Development of the training materials and instructional method are based on a training plan developed from the training objectives. The establishment of a positive training environment hinges on understanding the characteristics of adult learners. Effective adult training should be relevant, practical, inspirational, dynamic, informative, and solution centered. A role of the manager or lead is counseling team members through the learning process and being a subject matter expert, teacher, and motivator as they rotate through the training process.
