ABSTRACT

The subject of the military morale during the Vietnam War has probably preoccupied journalists, academics, and the makers of popular culture more than any other aspect of the conflict. In the image created and advanced by many in the United States (US), the Army was contaminated by an evil enterprise, which caused a progressive destruction of the Army's morale and ability to fight. Morale in a large war like Vietnam is one of the most difficult and complex issues in the entire field of military affairs. A very high percentage of American soldiers on the eve of Vietnam had fathers or immediate family who served during that war. Vietnamization added fuel to the fire when American soldiers looked beyond their own immediate concerns. Commanders always try to compartmentalize the world of an army at war. No Army in history has ever received the sort of creature comforts in the field that the US Army did in Vietnam.
