ABSTRACT

In the long historical view, the way the world as it is organized today the modern state is a recent development. The world of ancient Greece was the birthplace of the state in the sense of configuration of political institutions serving the interests of a citizenry and in many respects served as a precursor of the modern state as well as developing early forms of democracy. The individual city-states were theoretically sovereign and they followed their own political paths which, inevitably, resulted in conflict among them. A major contribution of the Romans to the evolution of the state was the idea of rule based upon law. The Ancient Roman Empire was founded on city-state of Rome around 800 BCE. The state in China was neither territorial nor institutional but rather was conceived as part of the natural universe. In the twenty-first century, there are three development patterns as concerns the "state". They are post-modern state, modern state and Islamic state.
