ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to describe the content and strategies of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP's) patriotic indoctrination. It examines how state nationalism is shaped by factional politics within the CCP and analyses the dilemma of Chinese state nationalism against its professed objectives. The chapter describes the CCP's strategies to create a patriotic atmosphere. It also examines the instrumental nature of the CCP's promotion of traditional culture. The chapter discusses the Party's strategy to create a sense of crisis among the people. It then outlines the definitive features of state nationalism. The chapter explores how state nationalism is dogged by the class concept, and how the CCP plays down 'class' in order to establish a broader base of authority. It also explores the overall dilemma of state nationalism and venture to offer an explanation as to why it is not achieving its set goals of nation-state building.
