ABSTRACT

Leslie opened the door for the initial home visit with the remark, "What are you here for?" After the nurse introduced herself and explained what a visiting nurse's role could be, Leslie responded loudly, "Then get me some medicine because I am sick!" Leslie was forty-one, a former secretary, and a mother of four children. Her older son and daughter lived in their own apartments in a nearby area. Her eleven-and three-year-old sons lived with her. She was connected to a case manager for help with care of the children, shopping, transportation, and budgeting. Her case manager had been following Leslie for about two years now and had vouched for her being a warm-hearted woman. This was demonstrated by the decorations around the otherwise simple apartment.
