In this chapter, the author begins with a model which expands the view of Self managed learning (SML) as part of a strategic approach to learning. He elaborates some of the strategic choices available. The contract can act as an umbrella document in showing how tactical learning elements are encompassed in an SML strategy. SML can be used as an umbrella strategy which allows for considerable choice beneath it. The author distinguishes strategy from tactics. Tactics are short-term activities designed to meet strategic goals. What is common to strategy and tactics is that they are organized arid time bound the main difference is the time horizon. The processes flow together and occur in the same time frame. The separation here is for the purpose of analysis and exploration only. In practice it is important that they integrate. However, there are some givens and non-negotiables within the idea of SML, especially around autonomy and responsibility.
