ABSTRACT

Structural performance is the ability of a structure to behave in a specified manner under defined loading conditions. Structural performance assessments can provide useful information to owners, end-users, and designers of structures [1,2]. Examples of performance assessments include measurements of the ability to retain a particular geometric configuration to within tolerances, and sustaining specified levels of serviceability, durability, and reliability under normal, extreme, or specified operating conditions [3]. The assessment of structural performance due to normal operational loads may be merely a matter of analyzing routine measurements of normal operations. If the specified loads in the performance criteria occur only rarely, such as during extreme events, then performance assessments may use a combination of low-load experiments, numerical modeling, rating, and other techniques to estimate extreme event performance capabilities.
