Wood (1991), referring to the 1985 earthquake in Viiia de Mar, Chile (magnitude 7.8), notes that' ... most of these buildings [relying on structural walls] sustained no structural damage.' Fintel (1991) has summarized the effects of 12 strong recent earthquakes and stated that: 'The author is not aware of a single concrete building containing shear walls that has collapsed.'
