ABSTRACT

Large universities are complex institutions that sometimes struggle to manage competing expectations and interests. This struggle is often apparent through the management of competitive athletics. St. Royal University is a large, private institution that enrolls around 30,000 students. The university is located in central part of state in a largely rural area, and the town that shares that same name is a typical small college town. St. Royal is well known for their intercollegiate Division I athletics. All of their athletic teams are successful in their conference, and many are nationally recognized. One sport in particular that does well and has great support from the campus is the women's soccer team. The women's soccer team is the most successful athletic program at the university. The athletic director at St. Royal University, Charles Morris, is a busy administrator, overseeing a $110 million athletic program. In particular, the revenue-generating sports of football and men's basketball get most of his time and attention.
