ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of a student veteran who tries to fit in and be of practical use to others; however, the student population and college environment do not match the "veteran friendly" marketing the campus uses. Tabitha Cole has been working as a financial aid counselor at Southeast Community College (SCC) for two years. SCC is located in an affluent suburb of a major metropolitan city. The majority of the students at SCC are traditional age, wealthy, and attend SCC for a year or two, while they figure out what they want to do in life. SCC is often jokingly referred to as 13th grade. There are numerous clubs, organizations, and social events due to the school's large student population. SCC's curriculum is highly focused on academic courses rather than workforce development, and they have a strong articulation agreement with the local research university.
