ABSTRACT

The MINATOGAWA ZUIDOU (EGEYAMA tunnel) is a good example of modern Japanese civil engineering technology which began in the first part of year 1900. The tunnel has become a symbol of the region by blending modern civil engineering technology with the precious natural landscape of the Japanese culture. This study examines the MINATOGAWA ZUIDOU (EGEYAMA tunnel) which was struck by the Hyogo-ken Nambu Earthquake in January of year 1995. This study will evaluate the historical value of the tunnel in order to preserve the original tunnel, and to utilize it for another effective use.
