ABSTRACT
The psychologist decides first what kind of general methods to use and then decides how to treat his results. As a method of psychological enquiry real acquaintance can hardly be more than an occasional accessory; though of course its rejection in this special field does not touch its position as the method of practical understanding of other persons or of oneself. As any method of enquiry may to some extent require projective behaviour on the part of the persons being examined it might be expected that projective tests other than the well-known contextless kind would require consideration. Economical methods of enquiry must be capable of wide application to areas of real behaviour and must give results that can be transferred to those areas with some confidence. Economy in this sense is achieved only by methods that are work samples in so far as they require the person to enact behaviour analogous to that which is to be investigated.
