ABSTRACT

There are some special words in English which contribute to cohesion by substituting for words that have already been used. The most important of these special words are one, do (or one of the other forms of do, namely does, did, done and doing) and so. Here is an example of each of these words used as a substitute:

(101) Trades Councils should ensure that the local branch of the National Union of Journalists is affiliated. Even if an NUJ branch rejects an approach to join one year, try again the following year and keep on asking the branch to join until it does.
