ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents the story of Allen Paul, suffered a brain stem stroke which left him with Locked-In Syndrome. Despite intact cognitive abilities, he is unable to move his limbs, he has no voice, he is fed through a tube and requires regular ventilation. Paul was an exceptionally good baritone singer and music was an essential part of his life. He remains interested in music, goes to concerts in a specially adapted wheelchair and has music therapy at the rehabilitation hospital where he was admitted soon after his stroke in 2012. The Mental Capacity Act says a person is deemed as not having capacity if they are unable to communicate. Paul, is a good communicator, but one has to be prepared to go through the slow and sometimes laborious method of spelling out his words letter by letter, through his eye blinking.
