ABSTRACT

Caring relationships between teachers and students are not valued in a higher education market. Without the protection and encouragement for caring teacher-student relationships, students are unsupported in their human development. The marketization of university has meant that learning outcomes are market-based rather than human-focused, and teachers and students engage with each other in the short-term rather than as a long-term investment. Therefore it is necessary to challenge the beliefs around care by transforming the educational environment, such as reconceptualising institutional programmes like personal tutoring, in order to strengthen caring relationships between teachers and students. When caring relationships are supported, this will benefit student’s personal development as well as value the care work of teachers.
