ABSTRACT

Sport psychologists may have an ideal opportunity to support the manager in their work and to increase the knowledge of this individual about the use of sport psychology to enhance the performance of the team and the staff. The manager or head coach of a high-level or professional sport organization is someone who may often find they have to make difficult decisions alone. Although this can be an attractive and enjoyable aspect of the role, it does place considerable demands upon the individual concerned. Undoubtedly, some of these challenges are centred on the level of managerial expertise and technical knowledge that the individual possesses. Other demands relate to the need to be a leader who is as adept at operating effectively on the ground with coaches and players as at higher levels within the organization, with chief executives, directors and owners.
