ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Sweden's support for the South African liberation movement. The three dimensions of this support included development assistance to the front-line states and the South African liberation forces, Swedish diplomatic missions in the front-line states, and Sweden's anti-Apartheid votes at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Sweden's aid to the front-line states and the South African liberation forces can be better understood by looking at the issue of international aid in general and that country's aid to the African continent in particular. As some of the front-line states gained their independence, Sweden did not only establish diplomatic missions in them, it also provided them with development aid and increased its aid to the liberation forces. Moreover, Sweden's anti-Apartheid vote at the UNGA was quite impressive compared to those of many other Western/Capitalist nations. The chapter shows, laws and norms form the structure of freedom and barriers in Swedish society.
