ABSTRACT

This chapter provides readers especially those who are unfamiliar with Sweden's relations with the Third World, with a descriptive account of those relations; and finds out whether or not certain assumptions can possibly be delineated from those relations that could be applied to Sweden's anti-Apartheid posture. It deals with the relations between the richer states and the Third World, and also treats the Third World more as an object of Sweden's foreign policies. Sweden, Norway, and Denmark are among the world's major donors of development aid in relation to their gross national products (GNPs). Third World political issue on which Sweden took a super-power head on was the Vietnam War. Important aspect in Sweden's relations with the Third World is what Nils Andren has referred to as 'engagement' in the developing states' struggle for liberation. For Sweden, the Vietnam issue was so vital to its moral principles that it was willing to risk its cordial relations with the United States.
