ABSTRACT

The family Syngnathidae consists of two subfamilies, Syngnathinae (pipefishes) and Hippocampinae (seahorses) (Nelson 1994), although Dawson (1982) considers pipefishes under two subfamilies, Doryrhamphinae and Syngnathinae. Worldwide, there are 52 genera and about 215 species of Syngnathidae, 51 genera with about 190 species of pipefishes and one genus, with about 25 species of seahorses (Nelson 1994).
