ABSTRACT

The group activity and accompanying handouts focus on building a peer support network for young adults who are siblings of individuals with special needs. This activity supports young adults who are balancing individual and family developmental adaptations in the context of caring for their siblings with disabilities, by normalizing the challenges these transitions bring and increases awareness of young adults about individual and family developmental transitions during the young adult years to help them identify needs and resources. Increasing the awareness of young adult caregivers about how individual developmental tasks and needs interact with the family life cycle within the context of caring for their siblings will help them navigate these transitions proactively with their parents. Young adult sibling caregivers (SCs) are transitioning through a number of individual developmental tasks, and the demands of the illness/disability of their sibling may impact these transitions.
