ABSTRACT

The markers take the form of variable vowel terminations added after the stem of the word. They are closely associated with another phonetic feature, namely -n after a short variable vowel, -na or -ni after a long variable vowel or -ay-. This feature is positionally determined by the following factors: (i) none of the items -n, -na, -ni is present in an annexed noun; (ii) the occurrence of -n after a short variable vowel is eliminated when the word has the article. These factors account for the alternative possibilities signalized by fin the schematization below.
