ABSTRACT
Business must embrace sustainability if business and humankind are to survive the current unsustainable conditions. System leadership is an essential model for business leaders to influence and achieve sustainability within their organizations and industries. This chapter provides examples of how system leadership has been and can be applied within business to achieve sustainable outcomes. The chapter begins with a summary of sustainability and business and systems thinking in business. This provides a foundation for discussion about system leadership in business, and specifically system leadership in project management. The application of system leadership for sustainability in business is then examined, including global perspectives of and barriers and challenges to system leadership in business. While examples of system leaders within existing literature are limited to the field of education, many examples exist of individuals demonstrating sustainability system leadership within the private sector, without awareness that the leadership method being used is system leadership. The chapter concludes with a personal interview summary of a system leader for sustainability from within the business sector.
