ABSTRACT

The Séchilienne landslide has developed on the right side of the Romanche valley, 20 km to the southeast of Grenoble in the Isère Departement of the French Alps (Fig. 9.1). The national road RN 91 runs along the valley bottom and then to the Lautaret Pass (the link from Grenoble to Briançon and Italy), one of the higher alpine passes which is not closed in winter. Except for a narrow winding road, the RN 91 is the only access to numerous ski resorts as L’Alpe-d’Huez and Les Deux-Alpes.
