ABSTRACT

Cancellation method is a Tier 2 Method (T2M) that aims to reduce or remove a weakness of a component of an existing solution by combining it with another component from a (possibly) unrelated solution that is strong on this component. Typically, this T2M leads to ending points that better satisfy the needs of the original starting point, but provide none of the benefits that the second starting point originally provided. This chapter discusses 4 T3Ms, one aimed at reducing side effects; one aimed at removing vulnerabilities, and two aimed at reducing constraints. The T3Ms are organized into two categories based on the specific search variables. The single T3M in the first category focuses on identifying components that have solved similar challenges in other solutions. The three T3Ms in the second category focus on the preferences and attitudes of users.
