ABSTRACT
A true home is the place — any place — where growth is nurtured, where there is constancy. As much as change is always happening whether the people want it to or not, there is still a need they have for constancy. Poet Gary Snyder says that there comes a time in life when the people have to "stop somewhere". The focus of their life was meeting basic needs, keeping the wisdom of living off the land. It was only as black women writers began to receive national attention in the wake of feminist movement that writers like Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Gloria Naylor offered a more expansive vision of southern black life. Even though there remains a focus on alternative living and new age spirituality that emerged in the late sixties and continues into the present day, it does not garner the interest of masses of the people nation's citizens.
