ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help university students to think about how they "took in" their experience abroad, and what that means in terms of their life and in the future. Like comfort with ambiguity, the degree to which a person focuses their energies on self-improvement goals versus goals directed at excellent performance can have an impact on their study-abroad experience. Take a moment to think about the way university students tried new tasks in their experience abroad—speaking a foreign language, adapting to new patterns of communication, learning the "rules" of engaging with a host family or friends. Take a few minutes to think of a concrete experience that stands out for university students during their time abroad. University students can do this whether there were on a year-long program or a much shorter study or volunteer program. The experience should be something that was challenging for university students in some way.
