Traditional teachers of Tantric philosophy and Tantric Yoga, Hindu and Buddhist, naturally want to correct that cultural misappropriation. Beyond the healing work of somatic experiencing, the Tantric Yoga tradition would also add the presence of genuine love and compassion. In understanding Tantric approach, psychology, especially depth psychology which takes the unconscious into account, becomes critically relevant to the pursuit of awakening. One of the great strengths of Western psychology lies in delving into the nitty-gritty of our emotional life, including the details of our traumatic experiences. The Tantric version of Yoga aims at the development of an integrated consciousness of all of life–the full spectrum of experiences from the most mundane and painful to the most transcendent and blissful. In the Tantric perspective, even sexual urges and yearnings are welcomed into the domain of our human experience.
