ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of specific techniques teachers can use to promote generalization along with recommendations for identifying the most appropriate techniques to use in their unique instructional settings. It focuses on way teachers can promote maintenance of behavior so newly acquired skills persist over time. The chapter describes way to collect and use data to promote and ensure that behavior is indeed maintained and generalized to other settings. It provides specific strategies that teachers can use to analyze data and makes sound instructional decisions as a result. The chapter describes the essential features and major components of generalizing behavior to different settings with different people. The chapter describes the high leverage practice of teaching students to maintain and generalize new learning across time and settings. Effective special education teachers use evidence-based practices with their students with special needs because of the impact on improving student outcomes.
