ABSTRACT

Many types of nonpublic schools exist in the United States, but two are particularly important: the Parochial High schools and the Academies. Parochial High schools are maintained by numerous religious bodies, but particularly by Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches. Normal secular education comparable to that obtained in a public High school is provided, plus religious instruction. Academies are privately endowed and sup ported institutions, comparable to the English Public Schools, and designed usually to train pupils for admission to college or university. Admission to some of the better-known academiessuch as Phillips Andover, Phillips Exeter, Groton School, or Lawrenceville School-is on a highly competitive basis, allow ing educational programs to be of an advanced level.
