ABSTRACT

The second six chapters of this book call on us, as teachers to understand that education is the common socializing activity organized, funded and regulated by authorities for all students in our society. Educators are the critical link for students to develop academic self-efficacy and empowerment, to become global citizens and active participants in the meaning-making process of their lives. As educators we must provide our students opportunities to recognize and reshape literacy practices that are most intimately connected to their economic, social, cultural, educational and intellectual welfare. We must also recognize the inequities that exist in our society and educational system in order to provide experiences that allow the students we teach to better understand the world they live in so they can fully participate as an informed citizenry.
