ABSTRACT

The first six chapters of this book call on me, as a teacher, to critically explore my daily practice, my interactions with my students and my relationship with my students’ parents. The authors challenge me to view parental involvement as a critical link in student success: a link that I have the power to influence. They do not offer lock-step solutions, programmatic interventions, or definitive answers. Instead, they insist on reflection and action. They challenge on me to explore how school Discourse shapes the way I think of the parents of immigrant and nonWhite students. They insist that I remain a learner, and that parents and children

have the power to educate me. They remind me that parents of immigrant and non-White parents care deeply about the education of their children.
