ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together the main ideas developed along the book in order to present recommendations for the future of teacher education. The chapter starts with a historical overview of the origins of the European project, which despite its imperfections remains an inspiration for leaders and citizens all over the world. It then focuses on the role of education, in general, and of the European teacher, in particular, in promoting social cohesion in the midst of anti-Europeanism, thus contributing to fulfilling the dreams of Europe’s founding fathers. The chapter goes on to summarise the main challenges affecting teachers in Europe, which were outlined in the previous chapters. Finally, it puts forward and discusses 10 recommendations for the future of teacher education in Europe, which open up new possibilities for policy, practice, and research.
