ABSTRACT
Some children and their parent escape abusive situations. Yet the reality for many children, even where social care services have been involved and there is close family monitoring, is that they continue to live in environments where coercive control is omnipresent and there is the potential for further domestic abuse. This chapter outlines how in this context, some mother and child relationships can become strained and distant. Children will benefit from having access to key adults who can help them express difficult feelings and fears. A key adult can also liaise with the mother and support communication about difficult issues between her and her child. For some children and families, this can trigger multi-agency work, where safety planning and protective strategies can be agreed, implemented and monitored.
