ABSTRACT

Students practice the component skills by role playing in their groups. Instructors in graduate programs are more likely to have access to new psychiatric in patients who need intake interviews and can be used to train interviewing skills. Each student interviewer is videotaped twice in an interview session with an actor client. Videotape measures the student's mastery of the interview skills and ability to critique those skills. Mental health professionals have developed a variety of training programs to teach interviewing skills to counselors. Such programs generally stress basic interviewing skills, such as empathic listening and effective questioning. Before the interviewing team is assembled, the students attend lectures and complete reading assignments that cover the assessment and conceptualization process. The interviewing team approach was developed for a senior-level, undergraduate, counseling techniques course and could be used in similar undergraduate courses on interviewing skills and counseling methods.
