ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains about teaching climate change in the United States. It focuses on formal schooling, there are many other sites of learning where Americans may or may not learn about climate change. The book describes one such collective project for educators and educational researchers. It aims to highlight best practices in climate change education, as well as explaining the ongoing challenges that hinder progress toward climate mitigation and adaptation. The book explores a few broad categories: formal K-12 educational settings, formal higher education settings, and informal educational settings. Cases were selected to showcase a diversity of educational contexts, political and cultural geographies, and ideologies at work in climate change education. The book seeks to provide a broad approach across both institutional type and within the wider educational sector.
