ABSTRACT

This chapter explores potential to introduce overt instruction, as defined by the New London Group, and active and creating student engagement to English as a second language (ESL) classes using digital stories as student project. It focuses on the technology aspect of digital storytelling work. The chapter describes on overt instruction that deals with the digital storytelling project — development of multimodal content of digital stories and the use of digital tools. Digital stories seem to have great potential to facilitate gradual introduction of overt instruction through regular scaffolded collaborative activities. The students started their explorations of digital stories at the preplanning stage by watching stories that were available online through digital storytelling websites such as Center for Digital Storytelling, Digital Stories @ UMBC, and Stories for Change. Students also had flexibility to revise components of their digital stories as they progressed in completing the project.
