This chapter describes an instructional approach that socializes intermediate Japanese language learners into literacy practices of explanation. Firstly, the chapter opens with a brief overview of why it is imperative to develop literacy practices of explanation in the field of Japanese language education. Secondly, the chapter provides an example of explanation and analyzes its generic structures and register variables. It uses materials that the writer of this chapter developed for his own instruction of writing explanations. Lastly, the chapter concludes with an example of possible instruction and potential literacy practices that can support students’ learning of explanation in Japanese.
