ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some key ideas relating to teaching and learning, to help you understand the learning process, and how you will manage that process as a teacher to support and develop learning. A clear explanation of one of the most common theories about how people learn is then provided using the model of the wheel of learning. We continue with examples of how your teaching can help students get on the wheel of learning to develop new skills, understanding and personal autonomy. Teaching students now takes place in many locations which are not accurately described by the term classroom, and the chapter concludes by using the term ‘learning site’, as a more accurate description of the places in which we teach today.
