ABSTRACT

The topic of this chapter is the forged epistolary exchange between Basil of Caesarea (329/330–79) and Libanius of Antioch (314–93). The supposed epistolary exchange between both men consists, in modern editions, of 26 letters. Of these, the first 21 were transmitted together, and in a largely fixed order. 2 The last five letters, on the other hand, seem to have been added to this original corpus at a later stage, 3 and will therefore be of lesser concern to me here.
