ABSTRACT

The purpose of the Teacher Education Project in investigating mixedability teaching was to aid student teachers to handle such classes more effectively. In the period 1976–80 when the investigation was in progress, few practising teachers had had anything but a brief period of ad hoc experience in this form of organisation, and so the Project found itself also with an in-service role. This chapter describes in outline some of the researches which were to underpin the Project's Focus series of practical skills workbooks, published by Macmillan. Some of the work is more fully reported in Sands and Kerry (1982).
