ABSTRACT

The use of technology in counseling has been apparent in some form or another for over half a century. The American Counseling Association (ACA) released a revised Code of Ethics with a newly added section on Distance Counseling, Technology, and Social Media to address new technological developments, highlight the benefits and limitations of technology, and outline considerations for counselors who utilize technology in their practice. This chapter argues that many of the current technological innovations counselors are using in their work today. An emphasis will be placed on discussing the benefits, consequences, considerations, and ethical implications for using these technologies in counseling. The University of Florida began a pilot program called Therapist Assisted Online (TAO) to offer treatment of anxiety, while the University of Southern California (USC) is designing a virtual client that will be used for training purposes in military client populations, and the University of Michigan Ann Arbor designed an application for the management of student's stress.
