ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights 22 American pop songs which were popular in television serials. The songs are discussed in alphabetical order. One of the more interesting features of the 1960s TV show, Batman, was the lively musical theme. Although the song was not the heftiest accomplishment of Neal Hefti, but because of the Batman craze, it may be the one most familiar to the American public. Set in Dodge City, Kansas, around 1880, Gunsmoke was a classic of good over evil. The series ran from 1955 to 1975, and the composition of "Old Trails" by Glenn Spencer and Rex Koury provides more of a musical background or mood than a centerpiece for the show. One of the dreariest song titles of all time was “Suicide Is Painless,” the theme song for the outstanding 1972-1983 television comedy series, M*A*S*H whose last episode on February 28, 1983 was seen by more people than any other single TV program in history.
