This chapter considers the flowering controls of the diverse grasses and legumes in the “temperate” or cool-climate group of herbage (pasture and forage) species. The group has a lower temperature optimum (about 21C ^33,75 ) for healthy growth than that of the “tropical” or warm-climate herbage plants, but shares the characters that enable survival and yield under grazing or cutting. The plants are almost entirely herbaceous and the more valuable species have a potential for many lateral shoots formed close to the ground and thus protected to some extent throughout the season or until the flowering shoots become vertical and suitable for forage. Cereals and grain legumes may also be used at appropriate times for early grazing or later forage.
