ABSTRACT

At a recent visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on London’s fair south bank, the tour guide was excited to describe to us how all of Shakespeare’s plays … tragedy, history, comedy… probably ended with a company jig. The dead would rise, the killers smile, the tortured groundlings perk up as the actors performed a riotous, frantic dance of closure, and perhaps even sometimes led the audience in a maniacal conga through the Elizabethan streets.
