ABSTRACT

The ‘Terzo Valico dei Giovi’ is the new high-speed rail link between the port of Genoa and the Po Valley, and constitutes the outlet to the Mediterranean Sea of the Reno-Alps Corridor, one of the main corridors of the TEN-T strategic network. The Third Pass Line will develop on a route of about 53 km,of which about 47 km in twin-tube-tunnels, with transversal connections that allow each tunnel to be a safe place for the other. The railway system is expected to have a significant daily journey up to 76 passengers train and 139 freight trains. The article highlights how the compliance with the safety requirements defined by the most recent European regulations has required the upgrading of the safety layout of the entire project and a complex design of the tunnels systems whose performance, defined by three-dimensional thermo-fluid simulations and probabilistic risk analysis, will make the new line one of the most advanced European railway systems from the point of view of safety.
