ABSTRACT
From there we rode across the boundary between Castile and Aragon to a great city called Kallatur [Calatayud]. The King had left recently before we arrived. We followed after and found him in a great town, the capital of Aragon called Saragossa. There we found the King who is a very old, little man, quite blind and miserably poor. 1 At that time there were two kings of Aragon who were opposed to each other. The landed gentry had deserted the old King and sided with the young King, and the whole land of Catalonia supported him. We remained some days with the old King quietly in Saragossa. He showed himself friendly to my lord and presented my lord and all his 133honourable attendants with the symbol of his fellowship, which he himself hung about the neck of each one, and gave my lord and me and the others the right to bestow it further.
